In a breathtaking project situated in Dumfries, Scotland, Lily Jencks Studio and Nathanael Dorent Architecture join forces to revive an old farmhouse into a modern marvel that pays homage to its rich history.
Embracing the Past
Nestled amidst the rugged beauty of the Scottish countryside, this private house stands within the weathered stone ruins of its predecessor. With sweeping views that stretch over 50 miles across two valleys, the architects were inspired to honor the site’s layered history by incorporating a thoughtful blend of materials and geometries into the design.
Layers of Meaning
Central to the design concept are three distinct layers: the existing stone walls, a sleek black EPDM rubber-clad pitched roof ‘envelope,’ and a curvilinear interior ‘tube’ wall system. These layers intertwine to create a dynamic interplay of old and new, with each element revealing a different facet of the site’s narrative.
Harmonizing Spaces
Within the interior ‘tube,’ the architects artfully arrange public spaces such as the kitchen, study, sitting room, and dining area, fostering a sense of community and connection. Meanwhile, private functions like bedrooms, bathrooms, and storage are discreetly tucked away in areas where the ‘tube’ delaminates from the ‘envelope,’ offering privacy and seclusion when needed.
Guided by Nature
Throughout the renovation, careful consideration was given to the existing ruins and the surrounding landscape. Large windows and door openings are strategically placed to frame stunning views and allow natural light to flood the interior, blurring the boundaries between inside and out.
A Tapestry of Tradition and Innovation
The Ruins Studio project stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design and preservation. By seamlessly blending old and new, Lily Jencks Studio and Nathanael Dorent Architecture have created a space that not only honors its past but also embraces the possibilities of the future. In every corner, the spirit of the Scottish farmhouse lives on, reimagined for generations to come.
