Twitter Introduces Retweeting with Videos and Photos

Twitter is rolling out a new feature that allows users to respond to tweets with videos or photos, marking yet another experiment by the platform. With this feature, users can now record a video or capture a photo along with the tweet embedded in their reaction.

Testing Phase on iOS

As of now, this feature is undergoing testing on Twitter’s iOS app, meaning it’s not yet available to all users. Since it’s still in the testing phase, it’s uncertain whether Twitter will eventually release it to all users.

This move towards tweet reactions follows Twitter’s recent foray into ephemeral stories with ‘Fleets,’ which it eventually discontinued due to low usage.

How to Use Tweet Reactions

For iOS users, accessing this feature involves the following steps:

Open the Twitter app, choose a tweet, and tap the Retweet button.

Select the option “Quote Tweet with reaction.”

Record a video or capture a photo, which will include the embedded tweet.

The video or photo will display the tweet, allowing users to drag or resize it.

Users can also select content from their phone’s camera roll.

Quoted tweets with videos or photos will appear in the timeline.

Similarities to TikTok and Instagram Features

Twitter’s new feature bears resemblance to TikTok’s video replies, enabling users to respond with reaction videos. This feature is also akin to Instagram’s recent adoption of video reactions for Reels.

Given Twitter’s track record in 2021 of experimenting with features reminiscent of TikTok and Instagram, the introduction of this retweet feature isn’t entirely unexpected. However, Twitter has traditionally maintained a distinct identity from these platforms. It remains to be seen whether this new feature will resonate with users, given Twitter’s unique positioning in the social media landscape.
