Twitter Introduces Tamil Topics for Android, iOS, and Web Users

Twitter has unveiled Tamil topics for all Android, iOS, and web users who have set Tamil as their primary language, catering to its commitment to cater to India’s diverse and multilingual audience.

Enhancing User Experience

The launch of Tamil topics aims to assist users whose primary language is Tamil in discovering relevant and engaging conversations across various domains such as literature, music, poetry, and more. By enabling users to personalize their content, Twitter aims to offer a more tailored experience, ensuring that individuals with Tamil as their primary language can access conversations that interest them the most.

Importance of Tamil Language

Tamil stands as the third most utilized language on Twitter in India, reflecting its significance within the platform’s user base. With Tamil topics, users can curate their home timeline to include discussions on a wide array of subjects, from popular artists like Vijay, Rajinikanth, and A.R. Rahman to sports teams like the Chennai Super Kings.

Twitter’s Commitment

Cheryl-Ann Couto, Head of Partners at Twitter India, highlighted Twitter’s dedication to fostering real-time conversations and connections. Through initiatives like Spaces and Tamil-specific activations such as the recent #FanTweets video featuring music maestro Ilaiyaraaja and a ‘Voice Tweet from Rajnikanth’ commemorating #15YearsOfSivaji, Twitter aims to provide relevant and exclusive content to its Tamil-speaking user base, fostering community engagement and growth.

Evolution of Twitter Topics

Twitter initially introduced topics in 2019, expanding the feature to include Hindi the following year. Presently, there are over 15,000 topics available in 13 languages, with approximately 280 million accounts following at least one topic. Twitter topics leverage machine learning algorithms to aggregate tweets related to specific subjects, ensuring users receive a diverse range of content from experts, enthusiasts, and individuals passionate about the topic.
