Iowa State University Student Innovation Center: Fostering Interdisciplinary Collaboration
Project: Student Innovation Center Architect: KT Location:Ames, IA.

Collaborating closely with university stakeholders, KieranTimberlake transformed the Iowa State University Student Innovation Center into a dynamic, multi-functional hub tailored to the evolving needs of future design pioneers, builders, and entrepreneurs. Originally conceived as an engineering-focused facility, the project underwent a strategic reprogramming to accommodate diverse academic disciplines and foster interdisciplinary collaboration.

Design Concept

Drawing inspiration from KieranTimberlake’s rigorous research methodologies, the design process involved comprehensive studies of each academic department’s requirements. By synthesizing key insights from these studies, the firm devised a flexible layout that seamlessly integrates adaptable spaces with fixed programming. The result is a vibrant environment where students from various backgrounds can explore, interact, and innovate.

Architectural Expression

Distinguished by its scale and versatility, the five-story center features a striking curtainwall facade characterized by undulating glass panels arranged in a chevron pattern. This dynamic facade not only reflects the campus’s agricultural heritage but also optimizes natural light and views while minimizing solar heat gain. Leveraging advanced simulation techniques, KieranTimberlake engineered the facade to enhance energy efficiency, reducing consumption by one-third compared to conventional buildings.

Interior Functionality

Inside the 146,000-square foot structure, loft-like spaces facilitate modern pedagogical approaches centered on experimentation and fabrication. The flexible layout accommodates a range of activities, from collaborative projects to individual prototyping. Raw, open spaces encourage ongoing program development, ensuring the center remains adaptable to evolving educational needs. Additionally, the strategic use of concrete provides a durable foundation for maker spaces dedicated to material experimentation and fabrication.

Versatile Amenities

Complementing its innovative design, the center offers a diverse range of amenities, including meeting rooms, a cafe, an exhibition gallery, and co-working spaces. A central stair lounge, affectionately termed the “step-a-torium,” serves as a focal point for social interaction and informal gatherings, fostering a sense of community among students and faculty alike.

In essence, the Iowa State University Student Innovation Center stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation in higher education, poised to inspire creativity and excellence for generations to come.
