The renovation project of the grave owned by the Kamakura Yukinoshita Church, located in Yokohama, Japan, was undertaken by Takeshi Hosaka Architects in 2020. The site area spans 30m², with the ground level designed to accommodate funeral ceremonies, while the underground space serves as a shared burial chamber accessible only to specific personnel.
Design Concept
The grave’s concept centers around evoking the essence of resurrection through the symbolism of the cross. Positioned against a backdrop of the sky, sunlight, and moonlight, the cross appears to float horizontally in the air, supported by three cross-shaped pillars. This abstract representation, with the cross facing the heavens, creates a profound visual impact, especially for those viewing it from below or above.
Architectural Features
The existing structure was removed and waterproofed, with a renewed finishing applied. The platform, elevated 650mm from ground level, supports the cross positioned 1850mm above the platform. The maximum height of the structure reaches 3000mm above the ground, contributing to its commanding presence. From eye level, the cross appears abstract, blurring the boundaries between art and architecture.
Symbolism and Impact
The cross’s orientation towards the heavens casts a significant shadow on the graveyard, symbolizing the eternal connection between life and the afterlife. This poignant symbolism is heightened during both daytime and full moon nights, enhancing the spiritual ambiance of the space. It is envisioned that the presence of the cross will serve as a beacon of hope and faith, preaching the gospel to all who visit the church’s grave and the surrounding park.
