The Red Church Reconstruction: Revitalizing Cultural Heritage

Situated in Olomouc, Czech Republic, the Red Church reconstruction project, led by Atelier-r, marks a significant milestone in the transformation of the Olomouc Research Library. Since 1959, the Red Church had served as a book depository for the library but remained inaccessible to the public. The Olomouc Region, owner of the historic building, embarked on a journey to revitalize this cultural landmark, envisioning it as a hub for cultural events and community engagement.

Reconstruction and Modern Annex

The project involved a meticulous reconstruction of the Red Church to restore its architectural integrity while accommodating new cultural functions. Atelier-r prioritized strengthening the foundations, repairing masonry, and renovating the roof, preserving the building’s historical character. Collaborating with sculptor Jan Dostal, the studio integrated contemporary artifacts into the interior, blending tradition with modernity.

To meet operational needs, a modern annex was added adjacent to the church, connecting it to the library directory. This crystal-like structure, constructed with matte black aluminum, complements the neo-Gothic aesthetic of the church. Featuring a common entrance hall, reception area, and café, the annex seamlessly integrates with the existing surroundings while providing essential facilities.

Interior Design and Collaboration

Atelier-r collaborated with Denisa Strmiskova Studio to design the interior spaces, focusing on creating a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetics. The reception area and café, located within the modern annex, feature pastel pink concrete surfaces, accentuated by a towering book wall illuminated with colorful glass fixtures from Lambert & Fils.

The interior furnishings, including wooden Zeitraum chairs and minimalist Hay chairs, evoke a sense of comfort and tranquility, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the meditative atmosphere. Floor lamps from Kaia add a modern touch, while graphic studio KOSATKO contributed to the project with a new visual identity for the Olomouc Research Library, enhancing its brand presence.

Conclusion

The Red Church reconstruction project exemplifies a thoughtful approach to preserving cultural heritage while adapting to contemporary needs. By seamlessly blending historical restoration with modern design elements, Atelier-r has transformed the Red Church into a vibrant cultural space, fostering community engagement and enriching the cultural landscape of Olomouc.
