India's Mango Exports Surge: US Emerges as Top Destination

India’s mango exports witnessed a notable uptick, recording a 19% increase to USD 47.98 million during the April-August period of the fiscal year 2023-24, according to a statement from the commerce ministry. This surge in exports was accompanied by a rise in volume, with shipments reaching 27,330.02 tonnes during the first five months of the fiscal year, up from 22,963.78 tonnes in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Leading Export Destination: United States

The United States emerged as the primary destination for Indian mango exports, accounting for a significant portion of the shipments. India exported 2043.60 tonnes of mangoes to the US during the first five months of the current fiscal, marking a 19% increase compared to the same period last year, as confirmed by the ministry.

Key Export Destinations

Apart from the US, India’s mango exports were also directed towards other major destinations, including Japan (43 tonnes), New Zealand (111 tonnes), Australia (58.42 tonnes), South Africa (4.44 tonnes), as well as countries such as Iran, Mauritius, Czech Republic, and Nigeria.

Promoting Export Initiatives

To further promote mango exports, the Indian government has taken proactive steps. It invited the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) inspector for pre-clearance of mangoes at irradiation facilities located in Vashi, Nashik, Bengaluru, and Ahmedabad.

The statement highlighted that the export value of mangoes during the initial five months of the current fiscal stood at USD 47.98 million, marking a 19% increase compared to the previous year’s value of USD 40.33 million for the same period.

Collaborative Efforts for Export Clearance

India has also collaborated with South Korea, inviting inspectors for pre-clearance of mangoes destined for export to that country. This collaboration facilitated the export of 18.43 tonnes of mangoes treated at the authorized Vapour Heat Treatment facility, under the joint supervision of the Directorate of Plant Protection, Quarantine, and Storage (DPPQS) in India and the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency (APQA) in South Korea.
